1. Events and announcements:
• SilkHighway и ”Occasion” projects management committee meeting was held from March 12 to 16 in Holland city Groningen. During the meeting were discussed issues, related to the development of projects, as well as objects and problems, appeared after transition to the new satellite operator. Also, were considered opportunities of participation of Central Asia and Caucasus countries in planned FP7 projects of European commission. Project Manager Vadim Navotny and UzSciNet network developer Gregory Yudin participated in the meeting work.
• UzSciNet Project essentially contributes to the development of telemedicine of the Uzbekistan. In the last time the use of informational technologies gains wide popularity in the reformation of public health system of the Republic of Uzbekistan. In this connection, Project of Telemedicine network creation and development was established. It’s goal – integration and development of technologies of Telemedicine and Distance learning in Public health sector. In the frames of realization of this project on March 15-17, 2007, the Regional Center of European Education of Anesthetists in the Republic of Uzbekistan conducted learning course “Cardiovascular system”. On March 15, the telecommunications Tashkent (Uzbekistan) – Trondheim (Norway) was organized, during which were listened lectures of foreign colleagues, such as Professors Olav FM Sellevold and Idar Kirkeby Garstad. On March 16, the telecommunications Tashkent – Moscow with the department of anesthetists and resuscitation of the Scientific Center of Cardiovascular Surgery named after A.N.Bakulev of RAMS. From the Russian side telecommunications were lead by the manager of telemedicine branch of SCCS, deputy secretary of Russian Association of telemedicine V.Stolyar, and from Uzbek side – Director of regional Center of European Education of Anesthetists in the Republic of Uzbekistan L.Nazirova and director of ADEPT Learning-scientific Center M.Boymukhamedov. During the telecommunication were heard lectures of leading specialists of Center of Cardiovascular Surgery. The high effectiveness of distance learning technologies in the process of postgraduate education of doctors was especially mentioned. This education method, giving opportunity to read lectures within distance, is very actual and opens great opportunities in development of continuous professional medical education.
• Results of Women Internet Festival 2007. The results of the “Women’s Internet Festival” initiated by the Women’s Committee of Uzbekistan and dedicated to the International Women’s Day were declared on March 28, 2007. The organizers of the Women’s Internet Festival were UzSciNet Project, Communication and Information Agency of Uzbekistan, Women’s Committee of Uzbekistan, and United Nations Development Programme in Uzbekistan. More than 350 applications were received from school pupils, college, lyceum and university students, teachers, librarians and housewives from Andijan, Fergana, Namangan, Kashkadarya, Surkhandarya areas, the Republic of Karakalpakstan, and Tashkent City.
The evaluation group reviewed nominated websites, blogs, pictures, posters, collages, poems and compositions and on March 20th, 2007 announced the winners in three categories: Best picture, poster, collage, poem or song, depicting the role of IT in the life of women, Best website, weblog, or publication in the Internet, developed by women of Uzbekistan, Best story or essay about experience of ICT use on the topics: “Me, my Family and ICT” and “How I learned computer and Internet”. On "Best Skills of Quick Search for Information on the Internet" and on "Best Application of the Computer and Internet in cookery and needlework" nominations, the online quiz and the exhibition-sale were held on March, 28.
Winner Recognition and Prize Awarding Ceremonies were held in six regions and in Tashkent city. On the Official Grand Ceremony, which was organized in Tashkent, the winners were welcomed by Asadjon Khodjayev, Deputy General Director of Communication and Information Agency of Uzbekistan, Farida Akbarova, the Vice-chairman of the Women’s Committee of Uzbekistan, Sherzod Shermatov, and the Head of Good Governance Unit of UNDP in Uzbekistan. During the ceremony the two prize-winners of the festival were awarded with titles “Miss Internet of Uzbekistan-2007” and “Vice-Miss Internet of Uzbekistan-2007”.
Based on the results of participation in five nominations of the "Women’s Internet Festival-2007", Svetlana Karimova, a teacher, school #1 in Andijan was awarded with the grand prize (PC and printer) and the title of “Ms. the Internet of Uzbekistan-2007”. Svetlana Karimova sent numerous works and was able to attract her family member and school students into the "Women’s Internet Festival-2007".
Zubareva Larisa, a teacher of history and law, school #2 in Fergana was awarded with quality speaker system and the title of "Vice-Ms. Internet of Uzbekistan". She also sent a number of works for all five nominations and was able to reflect in her works a wide usage of ICT on a daily and professional life.
All winners were awarded with special prizes and diplomas from contest organizers. About 20 mass-media representatives covered this event; more than 10 websites regularly placed new information on festival.
• Congratulations to Winners of “Spring Internet – 2007” National Contest! On March 16, there was held an official awarding ceremony of winners of “Spring Internet – 2007” national Contest, devoted to “Navruz” spring holiday, and organized by the UZINFOCOM Computerization and IT Developing Center from 12 February to 14 March. The contest had an educational purpose, including such directions, as “School website”, independent project and other.
It’s very important, that among winners there were many active teachers from UzSciNet – partners schools. Therefore, in this nomination five UzSciNet teachers were announced as winners and received a set of prize including USB Flash Memory Card, CD-Disk on open and free software, and book “Informational technologies”. They are: Natalya Khamidova (Karshi School#34), Otabek Umurzakov (Yakkabag School#1), Svetlana Karimova (Andijan School #1), Shavkat Yuldashev (Marghilan School #9), and Gabit Prjanov (Khodjeyli School #71).
Besides, “Nuriston” Karshi Academic Lyceum Informatics science teacher Akhmad Kodirov became a winner in the nomination “The best essay on Informatics lessons”. In his essay he shares about experience of ICT use during lessons, indicated websites he uses during lessons, as http://namangan5.connect.uz/test, http://mahorat.freenet.uz/pedmax.html and other. Especially he shows a role of ECC and Internet connection, as well as participation in different projects in school education and conducting lessons.
• Tech Age Girls Semifinalists Announced. On March 15, thirty-six Tech Age Girls (TAG) semifinalists were chosen to participate in the TAG 2007 contest. This year girls from six regions sent more than 100 applications, 30 more applications than last year, thanks largely to the legacy of previous TAG cycles. The semifinalists were announced on the monthly forum of TAG 2006 (http://www.connect.uz/children_forum/index.php?showtopic=854&st=15 ). The criteria of selecting women were: registration to the blog and blogposts, where they should discuss issues related to women, women leaders, personal responses to current events, especially published on the websites, original photographs, which illustrates important themes in girl’s lives, comments from readers that demonstrates an active discussions raised by blog owners, and blogs in English.
Girls are currently participating at the forum where they have been sharing ideas and plans in participating at TAG 2007. In addition, girls from March 16 to May 10, girls will complete introductory course in IT skills, plus web-designing consultations and course in leadership skills, which will be conducted by TAG 2005-06 in their schools.
• Cooperation opportunities with representatives of Microsoft and HP companies discussed. On March 30, it was held a meeting with representatives of Microsoft and HP companies. During the conference, issues on cooperation in effective use of ICT in Uzbekistan schools were discussed. Manager on Business development in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan of Microsoft Akhadbek Dalimov oddered a solution of Microsoft for educational centers, regional manager of HP in Uzbekistan Eldar Fattakhov talked on delicate clients, as well as Project Specialists Sayyora Rakhmankulova and Liliya Nikolenko narrated about experience of effective use of ICT by Uzbekistan teachers. In conclusion, sides agreed to cooperate in this direction and usage of existed resources for development of educational network of creative teachers of Uzbekistan.
2. Our trainings:
• Training program on Computer literacy for Medical officials. In collaboration with the project “Medical Information and Continuous Medical Education in Central Asia” and public organization Medicalexpress (http://medicalexpress.uz), in March were organized trainings for group of 18 medical officials including high qualified gynecologists and clinics employees on Computer literacy and work in Internet skills. Besides, in March, 70 medical officials from seven Regional Resource Centers gained necessary IT skills, as well as learned to search information from Internet to future use in medical practice. From the beginning of given program more than 500 employees of different medical institutions of Tashkent attended trainings, whereas throughout Uzbekistan this number is 1000 people.
• Students of military-sport class under the Foundation of Disabled Veterans of Tashkent city – are the youngest participants of Computer Literacy courses. Closed work on special “Alfa-training” program on Computer literacy on the basis of Project Internet-Center for students – members of disabled veterans’ families. Among participants in March there are orphan children from Orphanage #21, Tashkent Schools #58 and #180. More than 97 students have completed trainings in Computer Class of UzSciNet.
• Web design courses for different organizations employees. In March, 11 students participated in “Web designing” courses. Among them employees of different organizations, such as “Lik” Movement Theater, “Nikhol” Publishing agency, Republican Center of legal expertise, and Astronomy Institution. Skills, gained during the trainings, students plan to use in practice: in creation of e-journal (“Nikhol” publishing agency), in updating of “Lik” theatre website (http://visage-theatre.ilm.uz), in creation of website of Republican Center of legal expertise, in updating of Astronomy Institution site (http://astrin.uzsci.net), as well as in process of development and creation “Alfa-training” project site.
• Regional CISCO-Academy. New training in the Regional CISCO Academy on the CCNA program started in March. Group from 6 people was formed according to request of commercial structures in the frames of technical support of personnel of organizations – beneficiaries of UzSciNet. In this time, 18 students participate in Academy trainings. Consultations for trainers of new opened local CISCO Academies are conducting.
• Training on RedHat Linux. In March, new training on RedHat Linux specialization began for group from 7 people. Project teacher developed more than 100 questions for testing students on the course themes.
• ECDL Authorized Testing Center. To assist students to take an examination for receiving of “Competent PC user” status, trainer and teacher of testing center developed and formed learning disc. English and Russian version of methodic materials on all seven examination modules as well as great testing material are offered on the Disc.
3. Technical assistance:
• Statistical data on network use:
By April 1, 2007 network’s incoming traffic is 2 Tb and outgoing traffic is 600 Gb.
24 POP servers are supported - 10 in Tashkent and 14 – in different cities of Uzbekistan.
According to statistics of April 1, 285 local networks were connected to Internet and 1543 users got access through dial-up connection. 102 domains of 2nd level and 316 domains of 3rd level are supported by the project. 20 servers have been set up and supported for hosting websites.
• downloads.uzsci.net file archive support. In March, archive was added with new useful programs. Archive consists of free of charge disseminated programs, designed to safe and effective work of computer in ОС Windows and Linux environment. Also, here can be found antivirus programs, Open Office programs pocket, programs on work with graphics files, popular Internet browsers, programs on work with network, and others.
4. New resources:
• Resources, created as part of different programs. In March, during the implementation of project students and teachers created some new sites. Therefore, “Uzbek poetess” in Uzbek language http://bulakbashi10.connect.uz/nigora/, created by the Bulakbashi School#43 student of Nigora Buvamatova. Site consists of information and some examples from creative work of 13 Uzbek poetesses, such as, Zulfiya, Uvaysi, Nodirabegim and others. New site of Nukus School #31 Karakalpak language teacher Uzakova Salima (http://nukus31.connect.uz/salima/suwretler.html), where she gives information of lesson plans and presentations on teaching karakalpak language in school. Also we present you new site of Russian language and literature teacher from Termez school #11 Ferusa Norova http://termez11.connect.uz/feruza/, where she narrates about her activity, achievements, and invites to visit photo gallery.
5. Miscellaneous:
• Publicity. 2007 year 2-edition of InfocomUz Journal published two articles of Project Curriculum Specialist Sayyora Rakhmankulova. The article “Analyze of results of distance learning for teachers” talks about successfully completion of pilot distance learning by teachers on courses “Project methods in school education” and “Modern Lesson”. (Pilot courses on DL, organized by project were held from October 5 to December 5, 2006). Article presents information on basic course goals, learning results, results of survey, performed at the completion of DL.
The second publication “Effective use of modern technologies in educational process” is about three day seminar, conducted at the Central Institute of Avloni from February 10 to 12, 2007. The article provides information on improvement of Uzbekistan teachers’ skills and knowledge on ICT use as result of participation in this seminar.
On March 23, the newspaper “Vecherniy Tashkent” issued a publication named “Modern technologies for teachers”, related to the joint activity of Interschool Resource Center of Project and Tashkent City Institute of Improvement teachers’ qualification. Besides, on March 28, in the newspaper “Ma’rifat (Enlightenment) was published an article in Uzbek language named “Teachers gain skills on Internet use” devoted to the new study course of IRC, realizing in cooperation with Tashkent City Institute of Improvement teachers’ qualification. Therefore, there were mentioned, that teachers, successfully completed learning course will provide consultative support for other teachers of Uzbekistan.
• Successes of our teachers. Teachers of Project partner schools have been actively using their Global Connections computer classroom to update their lesson plans and connect with the community. Below are the some examples of their activities:
On March 2, Nukus School #11 Informatics science teacher Eshmukhanova Nurayna was selected as “The best subject teacher” in the Republic of Karakalpakstan in the contest that was held in Nukus School #21. From different districts of Karakalpakstan 13 Informatics teachers competed to became the best teacher on Informatics science. Contest included four stages, including Interactive methods, PP Presentation and testing. Participation in Project “Modern Lesson” contest helped her to win in the third stage, where she presented her three lesson plans, which were specially developed for the ML contest were highly evaluated by the jury. Nurayna shares: “I don’t imagine my victory without ECC and Internet access, because the professional skills in IT I got in ECC during my regularly work. My participation in ML contest played the main role, because during the development of my own plans, I analyzed works of other colleagues from E-library.”
On March 7, Ferghana School #2 Informatics science teacher, active participant of “Women’s Internet Festival-2007” Anna Bus, during the preparation for Festival with ECC volunteers organized and conducted action for Ferghana Orphanage children. Participating in the nomination of Festival “Best usage of the Internet in cooking and needlework” she found in Internet websites with description about Origami at http://www.origami.ru/mod/i_clas.htm and prepared paper toys for orphan children. Also, using the receipt from http://povara.ru/tort/tort5 they baked a cake for Orphanage employees. Ferghana School #2 has a long-time friendship with Orphanage children. Many time students organized trainings on PAINt program in school ECC, teachers Anna Bus and Larisa Denisova created site for Orphanage (http://domrebenka-fg.ru), conducted presentation of the website for community members. This site was awarded with encouraging prize in the “Best website” nomination of “Women’s Internet Festival-2007”.
On March 20, Namangan School #2 Informatics science teacher Akramjon Rakhmanov conducted consultation for five Informatics science teachers from Namangan region schools on methods of conducting Informatics lessons, Web design and site development. These consultations will be organized regularly during spring holidays. During the consultation Akramjon gave information about educational projects at the www.connect.uz and showed school site http://namangan5.connect.uz, as well as other sites, created by students. Furkat Urinov, Turakurgan School #4 teacher, noted, that many teachers doesn’t posses knowledge on web-development, whereas Namangan School #2 students create websites on good level. Namangan boarding school #19 teacher Gulam Kodirov said: “Upon completion of trainings, I’m going to create a website for my school”.
