1. Events and announcements:
• Deputies of Oliy Majlis (Senate) of the Republic of Uzbekistan received certificates. On January 11, an awarding ceremony certificates’ presentation was held to Deputies of Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan. In cooperation with the UNDP “Enhancing Legislative and Institutional Capacities of the Parliament” project specialists organized mobile trainings on usage of Microsoft products and principles of working with judicial and legislative bases for parliamentarians. Instructors continue to give consultations to parliamentarians.
• • Modernization of network equipment. From the beginning of January, a modernization of satellite station equipment was held by the employees of network. As a result of the modernization an opportunity to receive incoming stream with the speed up to 20 MB in second was opened.
• • Virtual New Year contest winners announced. From December 12 to January 16, 15 first through 11th grade GCE students took part in the Virtual New Year Contest (http://www.connect.uz/children_forum), organized by the Project and UN Informational Center. According to the terms of the contest students prepared projects, which are dedicated to holding New Year Celebration that could be implemented in school. The project had to include poems, crosswords, pictures and other educational games, which should have been implemented using the Internet resources. The aim of the contest is to involve more students to use Internet resources and enrich the materials to conduct New Years holidays. From four regions 13 projects were submitted, where nine of them became semifinalists of the project on January 17. Out of nine semifinalists five of them became finalists. First place was given to Nukus Gymnasium No. 1 tenth-grade student, Anna Vaganyan, second place took first-grade student, Misha Buchok from Nukus School No. 32, and fourth-grade student Yuliya Karimova from Andijan School No. 44, and the third place was given seventh-grade student Nurgul Abdullaeva from Bulakbashi School No. 43 and seventh-grade student Damir Simashev from Uchkuprik School No. 28. Anna Vaganyan created very interesting poems and riddles about computers and Internet resources. She even decorated the Christmas Tree with IT items, which you can see below. All winners received prizes on behalf of UN Informational Center.
• InfoCOMUZ Journal has published a blitz-Interview with the Project Manager V.Navotny. On January 30, on the site of InfoCOM.UZ Informational-analytical Journal of Uzbekistan an interview with the Project Manager Vadim Navotny was published. The article includes information about main directions of project activities, such as scientific-educational network of Uzbekistan, assistance in preparing highly qualified specialists in the area of ICT, as well as in helping in usage of modern informational technologies in the state’s public education system. Along with information on technical development of network, article also give an overview on intensive work of project in the sphere of development of different educational programs and projects. Special attention is given to project plans in 2007, as external channel extension, modernization of security system, realization of telemedicine project, organization of contest and events, creation of multimedia and electron resources, and also opening some of local academies under Regional CISCO-Academy status.
• Video-conference on Successful E-Government Initiatives. On January 30, a video-conference, organized by the World Bank and devoted to “E-security: Addressing Technology Risks for Successful E-Government Initiatives” was held. Project Manager V.Navotny, ICTP Project, and UZINFOCOM Computerization and IT development center took part in the Conference. Along with Uzbekistan, representatives of such countries, as Tunisia, Cape Verde, Ghana, Kazakhstan, Rwanda, and Sri Lanka, participated in video-conference. During the event such issues, as informational security, risks management, as well as measures, directed to providing of Information security of E-Government were discussed.
• Seminar on effective use of ICT in school education. From February 10 to 12, in the Avloniy Central Institute of Professional Development for Public Education Officials (CIPDPEO) was conducted three-day seminar on the topic “Effective use of modern technologies in educational process”. This seminar was organized by the CIPDPEO with the support of National Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan for UNESCO and UNDP Project “Capacity building for Internet technologies development and promotion in Uzbekistan”. The main goal of given event is to create a creative regional network of teachers on effective integration of modern educational technologies in Uzbekistan schools. The group from 30 educators from CIPDPEO, regional Institutes of Teachers’ Development (ITD), and schools’ principals with the basic computer skills took part in this seminar. The seminar program included such sessions, as experience in ICT use in school education of Uzbekistan, technology of on-line forum, demonstration of ICT use in educational process, presentation and work of Interschool Resource Center and others.
2. Our trainings:
• Training program on Computer literacy for Medical officials. In collaboration with the project “Medical Information and Continuous Medical Education in Central Asia” and public organization Medicalexpress (http://medicalexpress.uz), were organized trainings for 26 medical officials from 2nd Central Policlinic and Rail Clinic on “Basics of Computer literacy and work in Internet”. From the beginning of given program more than 450 employees of different medical institutions of Tashkent attended trainings.
• Regional CISCO-Academy. Ten students complete trainings in the Regional CISCO Academy on the CCNA program. Now they are preparing to pass certification examinations.
• Students of military-sport class under the Foundation of Disabled Veterans of Tashkent city – are the youngest participants of Computer Literacy courses. In the frames of realization of the “Year of Social Protection”, according to the special program on the basis of Project Internet-Center 30 students – members of disabled veterans’ families learn Computer literacy. Among participants there are orphan children with different social statuses. More than 75 students will participate in trainings in Computer Class of UzSciNet during a month.
• Training on preparation for ECDL certification. ECDL Authorized Testing Center of international certification conducts a regular training on preparation of students to take an examination for receiving of “Competent PC user” status.
• Tech Age Girls participants conduct consultations on websites development. In January, TAG participants taught around 40 school students to create websites, web logs, organizing for them more than 80 consultations. Websites on themes that would help Uzbek audience are completing. Besides, active TAG 2 participants help 10 disabled women and community members in Learning Computers, in the frames of “Believe in Yourself” program.
3. Integration of ICT into education:
• Interschool Resource Center realizes a new pedagogical Project. Interschool Resource Center realized a new pedagogical form of teaching modern Uzbek literature, the where the key role plays informational-computer technologies. This pedagogical project accomplished with Nigora Umarova, a teacher of Academic Lyceum under the Tashkent Islamic University. The project topic is personality, biography, and creative work of the most popular modern writer of Uzbekistan,Takhir Malik. Recently Nigora Umarova, an Uzbek language teacher, along with other her colleagues finished a course on development of electronic bulletins and editor programs, organized by the IRC. The new work of Nigora is a creation of newspaper, devoted to Takhir Malik (http://files.edunet.uz/newsletters/spec301106c.pdf). This newspaper became a main didactic material for each student, during the lesson of Nigora, which was conducted according to the particular, author’s pedagogical scheme. The next stage of jointly work of IRC with Nigora Umarova is implementation of multimedia lesson about Tokhir Malik’s creative life, accomplished with the use of Internet-resources of Uzbekistan. Interschool Resource Center continues to support pedagogical creations of secondary school teachers from Tashkent and regions in the area of ICT use in education.
• Computer literacy basics for children of not sufficiently provided families from Ferghana. From January 8 to 13 Ferghana Resource Center trainers Nigora Shamsuddinova and Zilola Mirzaeva conducted training on computer basics for eight children from low income families of community. Children were very interested in learning and successfully completed first stage of courses. From January 15, students began to learn to work in Internet. It is necessary for children to know how to use Internet to search information on different school subjects during the homework. Seminar participants got familiarized with Internet, connection process, searching systems and their principals. Besides, they opened e-mails and knew how to write letters. They all can visit Resource Center and continue education.
• Employees of Ferghana Sport School learn computer. From January 22 to 27, six employees form Ferghana Sport School passed training on Computer Literacy in the Project’s Resource Center. The aim of seminar if to instruct to work with Office applications, to integrate them in the future during clerical and accounting work. Seminar participants got familiarized with facilities of modern computer, as well as learned work with office programs. From January 29, this group continues to attend trainings on work in Internet. Now they have an opportunity to write letters, search information, share experience with other sport schools, know about sport achievements as young sportsmen as professionals.
4. Technical assistance:
• Statistical data on network use:
By February 1, 2007 network’s incoming traffic is 2 Tb and outgoing traffic is 600 Gb.
24 POP servers are supported - 10 in Tashkent and 14 – in different cities of Uzbekistan.
According to statistics of February, 278 local networks were connected to Internet and 1393 users got access through dial-up connection. 98 domains of 2nd level and 297 domains of 3rd level are supported by the project. 19 servers have been set up and supported for hosting websites.
• downloads.uzsci.net File archive support. Archive consists of free of charge disseminated programs, designed to safe and effective work of computer in ОС Windows and Linux environment. Besides, here can be found antivirus programs, Open Office programs pocket, programs on work with graphics files, popular Internet browsers, programs on work with network, and others. In total, 86 programs are gathered. In January, with the agreement with editors, File archive was supplemented with archive of popular journals InfoComUZ and Computerra for 2006 year.
5. New resources:
• Visit our new sitehttp://visage-theatre.ilim.uz. Website of “LIK” movement theatre was created with the Project support. The theatre unites professional artists and disabled people with its innovational creative activity. In April 2007, theater celebrates its 25th anniversary. Site consists of such sections as News, Conception, Repertoire, and Gallery.
• Resources created as part of Teachers’ Workshop During January, as a part of Teachers’ Workshop 6 web logs and over 34 electronic educational and methodological materials for e-library (http://www.connect.uz/e-library.php) were developed and published.
6. Miscellaneous:
• Publicity. On January 5, in Termez regional newspaper “Manaviyat Gulshani” an article was published by Termez School #8 teacher and active participant of Distance Learning courses Y.Mirzaev “Primary experience.” Author shares with his ideas and impressions after participation in Distance courses, gained skills and originality of this type of education.
On January 5, in the same newspaper a publication of Termez School #11 teacher and active participant of “Modern Lesson” and “Teachers’ workshop” programs D.Normurodova was issued. The article named “Use of Internet-sites on Literature lessons” describes teachers’ experience on ICT use in education, provides links to websites, created in the frames of project, for instance http://zulfiya.edunet.uz/, www.edunet.uz, http://bulakbashi.connect.uz, http://nuristan.connect.uz and others. This publication is an evidence of successfully realization of such Project’s programs as “Modern Lesson”, “Teachers’ workshop” and popularity of sites, created during the implementation of Project.
On January 9, on the website of National Informational Agency UzA (http://www.uza.uz/society/index.php?id1=16322) was placed an article, devoted to activity of Interschool Resource Center, named “Teacher, student, and computer”. The main goal of the Center, as it is written in the article is “to lean all managers and educators of Public Education System to work with ICT, and to be prepared for independently self-improving of computer skills during the Distance Learning. This direction is particularly important during the Year of the improving of capacity of educators on ICT use. Article also gives interviews with Tashkent School #285 Physical science teacher, actively using resources of Center, and Coordinator of curriculum programs of IRC L.Nikolenko.
• Closing Forum with School Administration on the Phasing Out Program Support for Schools’ Business Plans. On January 26, was conducted the forum with Projects’ partner-schools administration where participants shared their ideas and plans on continuation business plans for sustainable development of Educational Computer Classrooms without Project support (http://www.connect.uz/forum). Ten representatives of school administration took part in this forum leaving there 15 answers. As an epilogue of discussion an aphorism of Amir Temur: “I’m deeply sure, that one prudent, courageous, steady, and enterprising person is preferable than thousands of unprincipled, pococurante people” Served. During discussion participants also answered questions: “What events are planning to conduct during the Year, to make the work of ECC not only effective, but profitable?” Forum participants shared their experience on conducting events, which are effective for development of ECC. Lola Akhmedova, deputy principal of Ferghana School #40 “Parvoz”: “Our school has a monthly plan of events, that will be regularly organized and some percentage of profit will be spent for the development of ECC. All planned activities on Business-planning also will be continued and developed, which include: printing services, computer services for community needs, paid courses.”
