NEWS:
1. Events and announcements.
• Project’s partner-schools won “The best school website”
contest. On December 29, in the UZINFOCOM centre building a ceremony
of presentation of prizes to winners of a series of contests was held, which
was organized by Centre on the threshold of New Year, including “The Best school
website” Contest. According to results of general voting, three schools – partners
of Project were recognized as winners of this contest: Nukus Gymnasium #1 (1st
place and super-prize – personal computer, website: http://nukus1.connect.uz/),
Termez School #1 (2nd place and prize – digital photo camera, website: http://termez1.connect.uz/);
Tashkent city Sergeli district school #300 (3rd place and prize – scanner, website:
http://www.sch300.edunet.uz/). Overall
24 applications were sent to this contest from secondary schools, lyceums and
colleges of Uzbekistan. Centre specialists admitted that it was hard to make
decision, because they should have kept objectivity and at the same time take
into account that participants were not professional designers and programmers,
but school students.
Prizes and presents were delivered to Computer Classrooms of schools, where
winning sites were created. All winners also were presented with certificates.
In addition, during the ceremony the winners of other contests, such as: “The
best logo for www.uz”, “The most active participant of UZINFOCOM forum”, and
“The best idea on protection from spam” were announced. Congratulations to all
winners!
• Participation of the Project staff in the international
conference. . From December 11 to 15, Project Manager Vadim Navotny
and employees Dilnora Azimova and Tamara Shevchenko attended an international
conference on Internet development held in Kiev, Ukraine. The primary goal of
the conference was to share and exchange ideas and experiences for managing
web-based projects.
• Around 40 teachers throughout Uzbekistan successfully
completed the First Distance Learning Course. On December 5, the first
group of teachers successfully completed Distance learning on courses “Project
methods in school education” and “Modern lesson” organized in cooperation with
the Avloniy Central Institute of Professional Development for Public Education
Officials. These courses directed to the realization of the Decree of the President
of the Republic of Uzbekistan “About creation of public educational information
network of the Republic of Uzbekistan ZiyoNet” and among the first events, dedicated
to the Year of the improving of capacity of educators on ICT use.
The main prerequisites for participation are the basic computer skills, knowledge
of using Word, Excel and e-mail. Distance learning courses began from October
5, and during eight weeks subject teachers, curriculum specialists of different
categories performed control works on learning materials, answered questions
and participated on forums with teachers from different regions and experts
on using project methods and electronic resources in school.
Participation in courses has greatly improved teachers’ computer skills, increased
a creative approach of teacher to conduct lessons, caused for generation of
new ideas and projects. Upon completing of learning, were received 24 questionnaires,
which showed that participants improved their skills on using computer and Internet
from 20 to 90%, including experienced users. All participants think that it
is an effective way to improve qualification and it should be widely applied
in teaching. As a result of Distance learning course, participants received
new knowledge, gained new learning methods, and developed their independent
and analytical thinking. In addition, they learned how to complete effective
lesson plans on their subjects. All participants were presented with certificates.
• Gratitude letter from Japan. General Director
of Asia/Pacific Cultural Center for UNESCO (ACCU, Japan) Sato Kunio highly appreciated
the kind co-operation of Project in studying and disseminating learning materials
on Environment (PLANET 3), and expressed his gratitude to Project management
for warm hospitality to ACCU Center staff members during their monitoring visit
in Uzbekistan. In addition, Sato Kunio wished to cooperate in the future and
submitted Package of Learning materials on Environment for school students.
He also emphasized, that Children’s Forum on the Internet conducted in November
on the topic of “UNESCO Educational Projects” with the technical support of
Project and with the participation of ACCU Center representatives was particularly
interesting and fruitful (http://www.connect.uz/children_forum/index.php?showtopic=835).
• Interschool Resource Center has enlarged its activity.
IRC, which mainly functioned only in Sergeli district of Tashkent city, has
expanded its activity and stepped out to the City level. Resources of the Center,
which gathered the most progressive and creative educators of district, now
are available to teachers from other districts of Tashkent. Teachers, who actively
participated in the Resource Center’s activities are always aware about pedagogical
and other news, have a real opportunity to take part in different Internet-projects
and contests. From now IRC is located in the building of Tashkent State Institute
of Professional Development for Public Education Officials in Yakkasaray district
of Tashkent.
2. Our trainings:
• • Deputies of Oliy Majlis (Senate) of the Republic
of Uzbekistan improve their skills in using ICT. In cooperation with
the UNDP project “Enhancing Legislative and Institutional Capacities of the
Parliament,” specialists of Project Azizbekov R. and Tsoy I. continue to conduct
mobile trainings on usage of Microsoft products and principles of working with
judicial and legislative bases for parliamentarians. Congratulations to two
groups of participants, who have already finished trainings and received certificates.
• • Medical officials from leading medical institutions
attend trainings on Computer literacy. In collaboration with the project
“Medical Information and Continuous Medical Education in Central Asia” and public
organization Medicalexpress. (http://medicalexpress.uz),
UzSciNet Internet-Center organized trainings for group of medical officials
on “Basics of Computer literacy and work in Internet”, “Work with Excel”, and
“Work on creation of Power Point presentations”. Until now, more than 40 medical
employees of such medical institutions as the Clinic of Ministry of Internal
Affairs, the 1st Republican Clinic, AIDS City Center, and SES MSO of Ministry
of Public Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan attended the trainings.
• Around 30 people attend trainings in the Regional
CISCO Academy, where they learn CCNA programs. Students successfully
pass examinations. During December, in the frames of CISCO Academy were prepared
two trainers, whose tasks is the preparation of trainers for Local CISCO Academies
on courses IT-Essentials 1 and IT-Essentials 2 courses.
• ECDL/ICDL Testing Center News. ECDL Authorized
Testing Center successfully has been functioning during a year, offering an
opportunity to take an examination for users who would like to confirm their
qualification of a user of office programs. During the work of the Center, three
trainers were prepared, who took full examination packet and received status
as a trainer. According to results of trainings, conducted during the eight-month
period, course students took more than 40 examinations on this certification.
Among them are representatives of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of
Uzbekistan, employees of “Joint” representative office in Uzbekistan, Institute
of Irrigation and Melioration. In future plans of the Testing Center is holding
testing for Certification among Computer Science teachers from Tashkent schools
and regions.
• Tech Age Girls Finalists Teach Peers to Develop
Websites. In December, TAG finalists taught around 40 peers to create
websites. Most of them created their web logs and started learning the basics
of developing web pages by using Adobe Photoshop program to edit pictures and
Dream weaver program to create website. Girls decided to develop websites on
themes that would help Uzbek audience, since there are not many websites available
for speakers of Uzbek.
3. Integration of ICT into education:
• Seminar – training for Biology teachers.
On December 5, by the request of the Tashkent State Institute of Professional
Development for Public Education Officials, at the Interschool Resource center
building a seminar-training was conducted for biology teachers from Tashkent
schools on the topic “Informational-computer technologies for biology teacher”.
• Teachers learn to work with instrumental programs.
During December, in the frames of given program, a cycle of trainings was organized
for 20 teachers of Sergeli district.
• Training on “Copyright and protection of electronic
author’s resources”. On December 6, 12 leading specialists – media
educators form Sergeli district participated in training that aims to learn
how to protect electronic documents, placed in Internet.
4. Technical information
• Statistical data on network use:
During December 2006, network’s incoming traffic was 2 Tb and outgoing traffic
was 600 Gb.
24 POP servers are supported - 10 in Tashkent and 14 – in different cities of
Uzbekistan.
According to statistics of December, 274 local networks were connected to Internet
and 1254 users got access through dial-up connection. 95 domains of 2nd level
and 280 domains of 3rd level are supported by the project. 19 servers have been
set up and supported for hosting websites.
• Technical support. In December 2006, Project
began the process of reregistering websites hosted on UzSciNet with the purpose
of updating information about authors of these websites, removing unused ones
and increasing information security of the server. To resume hosting of your
website, please download an agreement from http://registration.freenet.uz,
have it signed and stamped and send a scanned copy to freenet@uzsci.net.

5. New resources:
• New resources of Interschool Resource Center.In
December, with the consultative and technical assistance of the Interschool
Resource Center was created a row of new recourses. In the frames of program
“Educational methodical web-projects” Uzbek language teacher Nigora Umarova
created a site, devoted to the life and work on Uzbek folk writer Abdulla Kadiri
(http://qodiriy.edunet.uz/).In the frames
of “Multimedia Resources for Education” Center volunteers developed online tests-constructor
Edunet-Tester in Russian and Uzbek (http://edunet.uz/tester),
with the help of which teachers of Sergeli district created 50 electronic tests
on different school subjects. In addition, on “Educational Database” program
was conducted an organizational work on creation of electronic versions of calendar-thematic
plans; in the appropriate section of IRC site (http://edunet.uz/)
in free access and with the authors permission were placed 80 plans, catalogued
according subjects. On the program “Media lessons” on the base of IRC were developed
and organized eight multimedia lessons on physic, informatics and astronomy.
• Resources created as part of Teachers’ Workshop.
During December, as a part of Teachers’ Workshop 10 web logs and over 30 electronic
educational and methodological materials for e-library (http://www.connect.uz/e-library.php)
were developed and published.
6. Miscellaneous.
• Publicity. On December 19, newspaper “Vesti
Karakalpastana” published an article named “Women Committee Site”, created by
students and teachers of Nukus Gymnasium #1 using the resources of the Internet
and Computer Classroom (http://nukus1.connect.uz/wk/).
The article covers prehistory and process of the website creation, and also
includes an interview with the Deputy Chairman of Women Committee of the Republic
of Karakalpakstan Gulshat Tursimuratova. Tursimuratova shares: “Creation of
the website gives us an opportunity to broadly inform community on activity
of Women Committee and will increase authority and effectiveness of our organization.”
In December issue of Informational-analytical journal “infoCOM UZ” in the rubric
“Among us-girls” was published an article of Project Curriculum Specialist Sayyora
Rakhmankulova. This publication includes an interview with the Library manager
of The Avloniy Central Institute of Professional Development for Public Education
Officials Sofya Nuriddinova, gives an information about use of modern technologies
in educational process by the teacher of Russian language and literature from
Namangan School #1 Roza Kazakbaeva, as well as narrates about experience of
finalists of “Tech Age Girls” program in the new “Believe in yourself!” program,
which aims to help disabled women to gain computer and internet skills. In addition,
the article provides information on useful links, created during the Project
activity.
