Contents:
1. Events and announcements:
• “Tashkent-Moscow” TV-Communications on TV-medicine issues was held on February 7, in Tashkent. Project organized TV-Communications between Republican Specialized Surgery Center named after Academic V.Vakhidov (RSSC) and the Scientific Center of Cardiovascular Surgery named after A.N.Bakulev (SCCS) under the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. Minister of Public Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan, professor F.G.Nazirov and Director of the SCCS Academic L.A.Bokeria welcomed TV-Communications participants. During the event, patients with complicated heart disease were consulted by specialists of SCCS.
• Project donates computers to women with disabilities at the eve of International Women Day. This action is related to goals, designated by government for this year, announced as a “Year of social protection”, and served as continuation of “Believe in Yourself!” project, started from August 1, 2006. The main goal of the project is to assist women with disabilities to give them equal opportunity in society through increasing an interest in usage of Internet and computer technologies in professional, communication, and educational purposes. Active participants of Tech Age Girls project (project-finalist of “Development Gateway Award” in 2006) conducted sociological researches in six regions. As a result, three participants, who showed a great interest in learning computer basics, were selected to participate in the project. They are Gulmira Iskhakova and Roza Safiullina from Namangan, as well as Larisa Shayxutdinova from Termez. The Project management decided to donate each of them Personal Computers, to assist them in becoming employable. “Believe in Yourself!” project is accomplished in cooperation with Women’s Committee of Uzbekistan, «InfoCOM.UZ» Journal, ICTP Project, and “Uzarchive” Agency.
• Project’s Partner-school became a winner of Republican Contest “The best school of the year-2006”. On February 22, in Zarafshan city school district administration hosted a Republican round of contest “The best school of the year – 2006,” where Project’s Partner-school won a third place. Mingbulak School #14 was recognized as the best school in Namangan region among the other 12 school-participants at the regional level of this contest that was held on November 15, 2006. The main chritera selection process was demonstration of school activities through computer presentation. Teachers of this school – are active participants of different project’s contests and programs, organized for teachers, and for students. Contest jury noted the high qualification of teachers in the sphere of integration of ICT in school educational process, as well as good equipped classes.
• Opening Ceremony of Local CISCO Academies in regions was held in Bukhara (Sik-Bukhara) and in Tashkent (Learnallover). Two structures will prepare specialists on IT-Essential program. At the present, in the Regional CISCO Academy, which is functioning at the UzSciNet there are four trainers, who came to study from the new academies.
• Results of three day seminar on “Effective use of modern technologies in educational process” were reviewed on February 12, in the Avloniy Central Institute of Professional Development for Public Education Officials (CIPDPEO). This seminar was organized by the Project, with the support of National Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan for UNESCO and CIPDPEO. The main goal of given event is to create a creative regional network of teachers on effective integration of modern educational technologies in Uzbekistan schools. The group from 30 educators from CIPDPEO, regional Institutes of Teachers’ Development (ITD), and schools’ principals with the basic computer skills took part in this seminar. During the three-day seminar participants gained a wide knowledge on such directions, as educational opportunities of ICT, experience of their usage in school education in Uzbekistan, educational resources www.unesco.org, www.connect.uz and www.edunet.uz, communicational technologies and their advantages in education, and development of lesson plan with the use of ICT on the each stage of lesson. All trainings were conducted by the high specialists of partner-organizations of the seminar.
• Visit of General Secretary of CEENet. Doctor Yacek Gaevsky visited Uzbekistan from February 22 to March 1, 2007. During his visit in Uzbekistan he met with UNDP Representative/UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Fikret Akcura. During the meeting issues, related to future development of UzSciNet Project, perspectives of participation in different international programs and projects, organized by the scientific committee of NATO and European Commission were discussed. Also, there were organized meetings with representatives of CISCO in Uzbekistan, and employees of Ministry of Public Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
• New Center of pathologic anatomy was opened in Nukus, in the frames of “TV-medicine” Project. The Center is connected to UzSciNet network, and has already begun an informational exchange among same kind of Centers in Tashkent, Geneva, Moscow and Donetsk.
2. Participation of Project staff in conferences.
• Project’s Curriculum Specialist Sayyora Rakhmankulova took part at the Conference that was held on February 14-15 in Tashkent State Pedagogical University on the topic “Curriculum problems of Integration of ICT in educational institutions”. On the Conference, Sayyora Rakhmankulova had a speech on the theme “ICT in education”, where she covered main issues such as: opportunities of Internet use in Uzbekistan schools, usage of project technologies in educational process. Rakhmankulova gave concrete examples of achieved results and statistical data that could visually demonstrate the help of ICT in achieving of qualitative results in teaching by educators.
3. Our trainings:
• Training program on Computer literacy for Medical officials. In collaboration with the project “Medical Information and Continuous Medical Education in Central Asia” and public organization Medicalexpress (http://medicalexpress.uz), in February were organized trainings for medical officials from Central Rail Clinic and 1st City Hospital. Also, employees from “Salomatlik” Center gained Computer literacy and work in Internet skills. From the beginning of given program more than 475 employees of different medical institutions of Tashkent attended trainings.
• Instructors of Project Learning Center continue to give consultations to parliamentarians. From January 23 to February 23, Center Specialists conducted 29 mobile consultations for parliamentarians on usage of Microsoft products and principles of working with judicial and legislative bases.
• Regional CISCO-Academy. Two new trainings in the Regional CISCO Academy on the CCNA program began in February. Consultations for trainers of new opened local CISCO Academies in Bukhara and Tashkent for receiving trainer statuses are conducting. Two trainers of Academy approved confirmed their qualification, passing through certification exams to receive CCNP status.
• Students of military-sport class under the Foundation of Disabled Veterans of Tashkent city – are the youngest participants of Computer Literacy courses. Continues work on special program on Computer literacy on the basis of Project Internet-Center for 40 students – members of disabled veterans’ families. Among participants there are orphan children with different social statuses. More than 70 students have already completed trainings in Computer Class of UzSciNet.
• Training on preparation for ECDL certification ECDL Authorized Testing Center of international certification conducts a regular training on preparation of students to take an examination for receiving of “Competent PC user” status.
• Disabled Student Conducts Training for Fellows in Ferghana. From February 12 to 17, Project resource Center in Ferghana, was the venue for an Internet basics course for six disabled students of accounting major from Kambarov High School of the Disabled. Trainer Abdurasul Abdurakhmonov, a student of the high school, attended computer and Internet basics trainings at the Resource Center last July. Since then, he had visited the Center to enhance computer skills despite his disabled upper finger bones. Abdurakhmonov formed a group of fellows and trained them to search for information on economics and accounting on the Internet as well as open email accounts and compose messages.
4. Integration of ICT into education:
• Interschool Resource Center took new quality step. Joint activity of Interschool Resource Center and Tashkent City Retraining Institute of teachers took a step to a new level of development. Uzscinet network specialists put up a Local Network Area, which has access to the Internet. At the present, more than 70 computers of Institute united in one system, there are four computer classes, distance learning center, library, and personal computers on departments. In addition, heads of Institute and IRC received unique opportunity to organize work in 25 stations on increasing the qualifications of teachers on modern, high-technological level. Teachers and curriculum specialists of the Institute today have a direct access as to pedagogical resources of Internet, as to richest bases of electronic educational resources of IRC. In the frames of Decree of President of the Republic of Uzbekistan “About creation of informational-library provision for population of Republic”, Institute library was recreated as an Informational-Resource Center. Now every teacher has an opportunity of free access to the resources of united database and Internet, as well as to receive competent consultation on searching the resources for professional development. At the present, UzSciNet specialists develop additional and effective system for file exchange, security and access to large local Institute network. Technical staff of Institute actively visits trainings for preparation to independent administration of network at the CISCO Academy of UzSciNet.
• IRC began a unique program on Internet-education of teachers. At Tashkent City Retraining Institute of up to 500 teachers, educators and school administrators improve their qualification monthly. Program on teachers’ education is very rich and includes not only school subjects, but also pedagogy, new teaching methods, educational technologies, basics of spirituality and basic computer literacy. At the present time, by the initiative of IRC, head of Institute integrated training on new subject “Internet-resources for teachers, educators, and school administration”. The uniqueness of this training is that teachers are improving their qualifications, independently from their skills of work on computer and Internet; they can navigate educational websites of World Web. Selection and expertise of sites is conducted by Institute specialists together with IRC staff. Teachers, entered regular retraining courses will be taught on usage of Internet resources starting from March. Every teacher of Tashkent can receive leaflets with useful websites’ links, advices on self-improvement in Internet-education, which prepared by IRC.
5. Technical assistance:
• Statistical data on network use:
By March 1, 2007 network’s incoming traffic is 2 Tb and outgoing traffic is 600 Gb.
24 POP servers are supported - 10 in Tashkent and 14 – in different cities of Uzbekistan.
According to statistics of March 1, 285 local networks were connected to Internet and 1461 users got access through dial-up connection. 98 domains of 2nd level and 312 domains of 3rd level are supported by the project. 19 servers have been set up and supported for hosting websites.
• downloads.uzsci.net file archive support. In February, archive was added with new useful programs, which became very popular among network users. They are: network program for countdown of time, spent in Internet. Picasa – software, with the help of which you can find, edit and share photos, multifunctional web-editor Smart Web Builder 1.25 for effective and quality creation of websites and web-applications. Besides, archive consists of free of charge disseminated programs, designed to safe and effective work of computer in ОС Windows and Linux environment. Also, here can be found antivirus programs, Open Office programs pocket, programs on work with graphics files, popular Internet browsers, programs on work with network, and others.
• WIKI Technology – for convenient data storage. In the text regime storage the scientific articles on physics was launched on UzSciNet servers. The system built according to WIKI-technology (wiki.uzsci.net), which lets structure written information, many times edit text, and mark in text structure elements.
6. New resources:
• Resources, created as part of different programs. In February, students and teachers opened about 100 logs, and created 5 websites. Some of websites including: http://margilan.freenet.uz/ - “History of Margilan”, which is devoted to 2000-anniversary of Margilan city this year. Site consists of information on Margilan history, great scientists, geographic location, and sacred places. http://nukus31.connect.uz/gulbaxar/ - - Site of Nukus School #18 teacher Gulbakhor Syimbetova, consists of different information on conducting chemistry, biology, zoology lessons in school. Site is created in Karakalpak language. http://nukus31.connect.uz/gaida/index.htm - Site of Nukus School speech therapist Shamuradova Gaida. Site includes lesson plans on Logopaedics, different articulation exercises, as well as useful links and photo gallery. http://bulakbashi10.connect.uz/sohiba - website of Bulakbashi school #43 eighth-grade student, where given useful links on beauty, culinary recipes, useful advices, and also some interesting information for romantic girls.
7. Miscellaneous:
• Successes of our teachers. Namangan School #34 Mathematic science teacher Nuraniya Bekbulatova, won a first place in Republican contest “Teacher of Uzbekistan,” organized and conducted on the regular basis by the Republican newspaper “Teacher of Uzbekistan.” She took first place in nomination “The best Lesson plan”, sent to the contest lesson-conference for sixth-grade students named “Is there a future without symmetry?” This Lesson plan first was created to participate in Project Modern Lesson contest, and was among finalists in April, 2005. Project staff helped Bekbulatova to create a website at http://namangan34.connect.uz/nuraniya34/) named “Mathematical on-line laboratory” that consists from following sections: interactive methods, search principles, lesson plans, and links catalogue, and gives useful recommendations and lesson plans presentations for successful conducting of mathematic lessons. Also, she has her own website http://namangan34.connect.uz/nuraniya/ with personal information, her blogs, works, and school history and photo gallery. Besides, she is a finalist of Teachers’ workshop in May, 2006 with her project “Recommendation for mathematic science teachers on using IT in preparing and conducting mathematic lesson”.
On February 2, this newspaper published an article “Internet in school”, including interview with Nuraniya, where she shares about her experience of participation in Modern Lesson and Teachers’ Workshop. Also, she provides a link to her website http://namangan34.connect.uz/nuraniya34/, and told about presentation of this website for 15 mathematics teachers from Namangan. Nuarniya says: “Participation in educational projects and contests greatly improved my professional level and pedagogical skills, and as result, it had a positively effect in my lessons”.
In February, Nukus School #31 Russian and Uzbek language teacher Roza Erekesheva passed an attestation (teacher’s assessment) to get the 1st category for teaching. But instead, she was awarded with highest category. The transition to highest category gives more benefits for teachers, as well as increase in salary. During the testing process, that consists of set of questions on the revealing of knowledge on teaching subjects, and of presentation of lesson, using interactive teaching methods. School teacher was offered to demonstrate interactive lesson, where Erekesheva demonstrated developed lesson plans, which were highly evaluated and appreciated. It should be mentioned, and she acknowledges that participation during the last 2 years in Modern Lesson and Teachers’ Workshop contests of Project helped her not only in developing of lessons, but also in sharing and enriching her experience that she could share with other teachers. Roza Erekesheva says: “At the beginning it was hard to understand basics of using interactive methods, but as time went by, participation in forums and learning of lesson plans from e-library of www.connect.uzwww.connect.uz educational portal helped me to know not only theory, but also use them in practice”.
