News:

1. Events and announcements:

Group of employees visiting Afghanistan. From April 16 till May 2, 2007 the group of four technical experts of the project visited Afghanistan. The purpose of trip was rendering a technical assistance to Kabul University in establishing a modern fibre-optical network.

On May 2, 2007 Ms. Atieh - Head of Information Department of the International Atomic Energy Agency visited our project. During the meeting with employees of the Nuclear Physics Institute of the Sciences Academy of Uzbekistan there was considered question on establishing IAEA Center in the Institute.

On May 3, 2007 the meeting was organized with S.Burke - the representative of the European Commission. The meeting was dedicated to participation of UzScinet in new projects financed by the European Commission. Particularly there was discussed question of connecting to network of TEIC project which connects scientific and educational networks of Europe and Asia.

On May 22, 2007 Dr. Chris de Wispelaere – the program director of the NATO Programme “Science for peace and security” visited our project. The National Project Coordinator Mr. Lutfullaev participated in the meeting where discussed latest updates on the project “Silk HighWay2”.

New unit. In May 2007 a new network unit of ATE - 42 was entered into operation in Tashkent. The network unit has a high-speed fibre-optical channel connected to the network control centre. The unit equipped with modern ADSL technology for users to connect.

Participation in conferences
On April 25, 2007 Sayyora Rakhmankulova - project specialist made presentation “Project experience in effective utilization of ICT and connecting schools to UzSciNet network” in a scientific - methodical conference “Organizational issues of teaching and educational process in High Military Educational Institution (HMEI) and ways of solution”.

On May 14-16, 2007 Sayyora Rakhmankulova - Curriculum Specialist participated in the International Conference “Connecting in the Global Village” with the presentation “Distant learning of modern technologies for teachers of Uzbekistan” in Winnipeg, Canada. There was considered various aspects of digital and distant trainings, examples of worldwide trainings and establishing of a unified digital area.

On May 25, 2007 there was submitted presentation on “Sharing experience on using educational possibilities of ICT in schools of Uzbekistan” in Republican conference “Increasing and improving of qualification system quality and methods of interactive application in scientific educational process” in Central Institute of Professional Development for Public Education Officials named after Avloniy. In the conference there were discussed questions regarding introduction of project training to educational process and presented forums of educational projects “Teachers’ workshop”, and raised questions about influence of project methods on quality of education.

Winners of drawing contest “Education for all” are announced. On April 27, 2007 winners of drawing contest are announced on forum of educational portal www.connect.uz which was conducted within the framework of “Education for all”, declared on April 6, 2007 by the National Commission for UNESCO in Uzbekistan, with a support of UNDP Project “Capacity Building for Internet technologies Development and Promotion in Uzbekistan”. Contest participants were children aged from 7 till 17 years old inclusive, they were offered to depict how one can reach his/her main objectives “Education for all” in the community (city, district, school, in a court yard, in home), presented by participants of the World Conference in Jomtene, Thailand.

To the forum contest there were sent 119 works from various regions of Uzbekistan and only the best drawings selected in two age categories of two nominations.

In the first age category participants from 7 to 11 years old inclusive: Shadiyeva Bahora – a schoolgirl of 2nd grade from Tashkent School No.284 and Krilova Lyuba- a schoolgirl of 5th grade of Karshi School No.12 won the 1st place.

In the second age category participants from 12 to 17 years old inclusive: Berjanva Akjibek – a schoolgirl of 10th grade from Nukus School No.4 and also Brosalina Elena- a schoolgirl of 8th grade of Karshi School No.12 won the 1st place. All contest finalists were awarded with memorable prizes for active participation.

Studying history via a videoconference. On May 3, 2007 a seminar “Acquaintance with opportunities of videoconferences” was conducted on a theme “The Great Silk Road and its influence on the society development”. The main purpose of this conference: experience exchange via online technologies use in teaching history. The seminar participants: The Central Institute of Professional Development for Public Education Officials named after Avloniy, the Republican Center of Education, teachers of Tashkent, Ferghana, Namangan, Termez and Michael Cunningham - the teacher of Del Valle High School, Del Valle, Texas with students of 9th grades from New York and Florida. During the videoconference the teacher of history from Ferghana, Larissa Zurabava made presentation “The Great Silk Road - bonds of peoples and times”.

Millennium Development Goals forum in Uzbekistan. On May 28, 2007 United Nations Resident Coordinator Office organized a forum for high school teachers, dedicated to Millennium Development Goals (MDG). The forum enabled teachers of high schools to learn more about the United Nations activities in Uzbekistan and conducted actions towards MDG achievement. In its turn participants offered ideas about penetration MDG in the school program and also encouraging pupils by giving them an opportunity to prepare presentation “Achieving MDG in Uzbekistan” for their peers as a manual.

2. We train:

Training program on Computer literacy for Medical employees.In collaboration with the project “Medical Information and Continuous Medical Education in Central Asia” and public organization Medicalexpress (http://medicalexpress.uz), in April and May there were organized computer literacy and the Internet basics trainings for group of 28 medical employees of Medical Academy and Ministry of Internal Affairs clinic’s employees, Railroad and Central polyclinics No.2. Training participants learned to search information in Internet and use it in their future medical practice. From the beginning of the program more than 500 employees of different medical institutions of Tashkent attended this training.

Trainings under the special program "Alpha - training" accomplished.It was developed for students of military-sport class under the Foundation of Disabled Veterans of Tashkent city. On April 17, 2007 in Tashkent School No.180 there was official certificate awarding ceremony for training participants. Within the project framework 110 students- members of disabled veterans’ families attended training on Computer literacy. Guidance of “Alpha –training” program expressed their gratitude to Project manager and project staff for rendered practical assistance. In May, 12 students participated in training “Basics of Web designing”. They will use their acquired skills for developing site http//alfatraining.ilim.uz initially created by the project employees

Within the project framework of “Enhancement of managerial skill in public sector through educational formation and researching potential of The State Academy and Public Construction of the President of Republic”. A project teacher held weekly training on “Web design and modern Internet technologies” for 7 employees of Central Informational Resources of the State Construction Academy. This is the third training conducted for Academy’s employees by teachers of educational center “UZSCINET”

Regional CISCO Academy. Training on CCNA specialization is continuing for a group of 6 people was formed according to request of commercial structures in the frames of technical support of personnel of organizations – beneficiaries of UzSciNet In this time, 22 students participated in Academy trainings. Local CISCO Academy in Bukhara has finished preparation of trainers and started independent students training under the IT-Essential program. Local CISCO Academy in Navoi started preparing trainers of program IT-Essential.

Training on RedHat Linux. A group of 7 persons are finishing RedHat Linux training.

Test center ECDL. Within the framework of preparation for the international certification, a teacher and a trainer of The Test Center organized training according to 4 test modules for employees of JOINT Representative Office in Republic of Uzbekistan. 6 employees of the representative who took part in the training.

Tashkent head master applies Internet to increase her qualification. May 14 -17, 2007 Nina Butabaeva - a teacher of pedagogic faculty of TSIRIQTP and manager of Sergely public educational department Farida Zayzi held cycle trainings in the interschool resource center where participants of this training were more than 70 head masters and studies directors of Tashkent schools. The main purposes of training – introduce new achievement in informational education to head masters of Tashkent schools and discuss problems and school administrational tasks.

Participants of the training received not only theoretical knowledge, but also practical skill of using the Internet, learned navigation on educational sites. Sites of Uzbek school and CIS countries generated special interest among participants.

They learned methods of multimedia lessons and its fragments. Special attention was paid to interactive educational forms of using PC means. Participants were offered electronic lesions and training simulators of various school disciplines. Leading school methodologists discussed merits and demerits of using computer technologies in education. All participants took an active part in discussion about task, opportunities and problems of school information science and they expressed readiness to support pedagogical innovations in schools, connected to modern informational technologies.

Distant learning courses for gynaecologists. On April 9 2007, with a technical assistance of the project there was held distant learning course (http://dl.freenet.uz) “Current issues in practical gynecology” supervised by Lyudmila Tverdikova- (the candidate of medical sciences, gynecologist and adviser on distant learning training). 25 gynecologists of Uzbekistan participated in this course. Objectives: providing professional skills in endoscopic surgery, treatment of gynecologic diseases by contraception, regulation of reproductive system.

Urgench students are raising the level of their skills.
On April 25-30, 2007 trainers Tamara Shevchenko and Dilnora Azimova organized seminars “Making a social advertisement and basics of video editing”, “Publishing a newsletter and public service announcement” for 60 Urgench students. During trainings participants learned fundamental principles of journalism and public speaking, acquired skills of gathering information, making interviews, writing news and a newsletter, using visual aids, statistics and stating for presentation efficiency.

On May, 29, 2007 the project volunteers Salaev Azamat and Mashrapova Rashida held training “How to write a letter of recommendation” for 14 students of the School of Young Leaders at the Internet center in Urgench. This training was continuation of a seminar “How correctly to make a resume?” conducted on May 11th and on May 18th in English and Russian. The purpose of the training - teach students how to write resume and recommendation letters correctly which is necessary for finding a study and a job.

3. Integration of ICT into education:

Interschool Resource Center news. In April and in May for Tashkent teachers there were developed and organized seminars for the following themes: for teachers of biology- "Multimedia presentations in biology"; for school directors of studies “Electronic document circulation”, “Multimedia resources and lessons” ; for teachers of Uzbek and Russian languages “Multimedia lessons”; for headmasters “Information science in schools”, “Multimedia lessons”; for teachers of public disciplines “Internet - resources for self-educative teachers” and for teachers of mathematics “Multimedia technologies for teachers”. In total 120 teachers participated in these seminars.

Teachers of public disciplines get acquainted with the educational Internet. On May 2 2007, with the support of Interschool Resource Center (IRC) Fayzullaeva Feruza - a teacher of public disciplines of Tashkent institute of professional skill improvement and retraining of pedagogical staff organized special training “Internet technologies for teachers of spirituality”. She researched educational sector of Internet and worked out catalogues of internet sites which is necessary for teachers who teach spirituality as a subject and in the process of preparing multimedia lessons.

4. Новые ресурсы:

The new Internet site dedicated to Abdulla Kahhar. On May 12, 2007 with the support of project specialist Nigora Umarova - the teacher of Uzbek language and literature of School No.300 finished research work on biography and creative works of the national writer of Uzbekistan- Abdulla Kahhar. During her project work, Nigora collected and digitalized a set of materials devoted to the writer. Today, thanks to her efforts, there is appeared a site in the Internet www.qahhor.edunet.uz where one can learn detailed history, bibliography, works, aphorisms - popular expressions of the writer. Most information on this site is a literary analysis and memoirs of the well-known contemporaries about Abdulla Kahhar. It is the first site in the WorldNet dedicated to this author.

It was created a fiction library for young students in Uzbek http://www.kitob.edunet.uz within the framework of the Program “Educational and methodical webs – projects” with advisory and technical support of the Interschool Resource Center. The author of the site – Mukhabbat Davletjanova – a teacher of elementary grades of Tashkent School - garden No.318.

With the assistance of the educational center of the project Savelyeva Svetlana - an attendee of “Basics of Web designing” created site for the Foundation of Disabled Veterans of Afghanistan http://www.alfatraining.ilim.uz/.

On April 10, a Karakalpak teacher of Nukus School No.1 Abdijabbarova Hurlikhan held a presentation of a new web resource http://nukus1.connect.uz/hurli, created within the framework of “Pedagogical Workshop”. The website refers to “Colloquial Karakalpak language”. The idea of creation such a site came to Hurlikhan due to absence of Karakalpak phrases and words translatable into English on various aspects, such as greeting, acquaintance, request and etc. One of the remarkable things in this site that it has on-line audio conversion of Alphabet in mp3 format http://nukus1.connect.uz/hurli/web.htm.

On April 17, Ahmad Kadirov - a teacher of computer science of Karshi Lyceum “Nuristan” created online page for testing students’ computer science knowledge. http://mahorat.freenet.uz/test.html. The site consists of 36 questions and it is designed to be an examination instead paper tests. The test has been approved by 250 pupils and has yielded good results. Such kind of testing helps to save time, efforts and facilitate teacher’s work. The site of testing is a part of an educational portal http://mahorat.freenet.uzhttp://mahorat.freenet.uz created by Ahmad Kadirov in 2005.

By June 1, 2007 25 POP servers are supported - 11 in Tashkent and 14 – in different cities of Uzbekistan.
293 local networks were connected to Internet and 1622 users got access through dial-up connection. 98 domains of 2nd level and 312 domains of 3rd level are supported by the project. 19 servers have been set up and supported for hosting websites.

downloads.uzsci.net file archive support In May, archive was added with new useful programs and information: reference book for Windows register, Hardware and system utilities, graphical editors for Linux and Windows OS.

6. Miscellaneous.

Successes of our teachers. The teacher from Ferghana School No.21won completion “Woman in the society”. On April 10, 2007 in Tashkent there was conducted awarding ceremony of “Woman in the society” competition. It was declared on www.connect.uz site and lasted from March 2 till March 15, 2007. The main objective of the contest is to encourage initiative and increase women interest towards active public work. Competition passed on two nominations: the best photo and the best essay on a theme “Woman’s involvement in the society”. The competent jury of 10 persons selected three winners in each nomination and winners were awarded with valuable prizes and with memorable certificates from organizers of the competition.

Svetlana Guljaeva the teacher of Ferghana School No.1 won the 1st place in the best essay nomination. As a valuable prize Svetlana was honored with TV ROISON, DVD and the memorable certificate.

In a nomination “The best photo” there was submitted 45 photos on weekly photo-exhibition dedicated to the woman role in the society. All competition participants received memorable certificates for an active participation.
