From the very beginning of its existing the UzSciNet network gains financial
support from non-governmental, non-profit organizations. Without such support
the network is not likely to be built, and all the projects would not have been
put into practice.
It is only thanks to our sponsors we have become what we are dependable
information technology support for more than 300 scientific and educational
organizations of Uzbekistan. The first sponsor was the Scientific
Committee of NATO providing the grant for building the UzSciNet control
center in 1977.
In 1988, the grant given by the Open Society Institute
afforded us an opportunity of expanding the network, increasing the number of
modem pools and connecting to the system Zaknet. Due to supporting the OSIAF
and the Scientific Committee of NATO, the UzSciNet had numbered over a hundred
users by the end of 1998.
In 1999, the Scientific Committee of NATO provided a new grant allowing a
further expanding the network. At the same period the OSIAF took another program
for supporting Uzbekistan and decided on the UzSciNet as the basic network in
Uzbekistan. In autumn of 1999 the United Nations Development
Program and the OSIAF made decision on realization of the joint project
"Capacity Building for Internet Technologies Development and Promotion
in Uzbekistan" designed to develop Internet in the country, with main accent
being made on building the network for science and education. In February,2000,
this project was signed and the network gained its advancement.
